What is the Pass Piece?

The Pass Piece is a new,

official chess figure that represents your right to skip one move per game.

Each player has their

own Pass Piece — white and black.

It is placed next to the board

at the start of the game.

When a player decides to use their pass, they move their Pass Piece

onto the board.

That turn is skipped — once per game. No exceptions.

Pass Notation in ChessWithPass

In ChessWithPass, each player has the right to pass one turn per game — a powerful and philosophical choice.

To record this special move, you can use one of the following notations:

✅ Notation options:

  • -- (minimalist and clean)

  • pass (explicit and clear)

Both are accepted and mean:

“the player chose not to move on this turn.”

📘 Example:

                   11. Bc4     Bc5

                   12. --         Nf6

                   13. d3       O-O

Or:              11. Bc4     Bc5

                        12. pass     Nf6

                        13. d3       O-O

In both cases, White skipped move 12.
